Enrolling in a Medical Plan

If you are enrolling in a medical plan, first decide if you want a preferred provider plan (Uniform Medical Plan) or a managed care plan. If you decide on a managed care plan, you will also need to choose whether you want a “classic” plan or a “value” plan. To learn more about the differences, read on.

Choosing Between a Preferred Provider and Managed Care Plans:

  • The Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA) provides a helpful comparison of the benefits of the preferred provider and managed care plans. You can also find a list of the major exclusions of both types of plans.
  • Contact your doctor or medical facility to determine which plans they accept. If the doctor accepts more than one plan, ask which plan the doctor prefers. Alternatively, you can see if your current doctor accepts the medical plan of your choice using the Provider Directory provided for state employees. Select Public Employees Benefits Board from the dropdown menu.
Each plan’s website contains information about participating doctors and pharmacies, certificates of coverage and plan books. Please contact the plan directly to request information and/or to download claim forms.
